Owen Springs Reserve Night Drive and BBQ

Trip Report – Kirsten Johnston

The original trip was planned for Saturday 11 November, however, Alice Springs copped a lot of rain that week and the constant drizzle would have made for an unpleasant bbq, so the trip was postponed until 18 November pending weather conditions.

The road reports showed that the tracks were open, so we made the decision to undertake the trip and I am glad we did. By the time we got to redbank waterhole, the sun was setting and there was still plenty of light for the kids to go and play in the river bed. The weather was amazing.

Johno set up at the bbq and cooked the meat. Shortly after eating, we packed up and set off in the dying light to drive the Owen Springs track. We were surprised by how dry it was, except for a few puddles here and there. At any rate, we managed to get our vehicles thoroughly dirty, which was fun.

We stopped at the old Owen Springs Station and after finally getting the kids to turn off their torches, we were greeted by a million stars. It was really a gorgeous night with great company, friends and food. Thanks everyone for a great night.
