10/09/16 - AGM & 20th Birthday Celebrations

10 September 2016 -

On the afternoon of September 10th, some 55 members, sponsors, and their guests descended upon the ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton for an afternoon of official business, followed by celebration. Combining the Annual General Meeting (AGM), September General Meeting, and the club’s 20th Birthday was a logistic headache, made all the more easy with the help of the wonderful event staff at the DoubleTree. The layout was decided upon weeks in advance, and executed to the letter.

In the AGM, the previous committee stepped down, while a new committee emerged to lead the club for the next year. Steve maintained the President role, Mike was appointed Vice President, Steph stepped into the Secretary position, and Ian adopted the treasury, with Kirsten staying on as Trip Coordinator.

The General meeting that followed brought discussion about the new year to come, with trips to organise, relationships to expand on, and fund-raising plans to be made for the year ahead.

Afterwards, a selection of food was served throughout the room while a slide show of photographs of the last 20 years of club activities was displayed, until announcements were made for some awards and door prizes to the attendees – name tags issued at the start of the event were the entry tickets in the prize pool.

Awards were issued according to a small series of categories -

Captain Carnage: the person with the most accumulated damage expenses for the year – won by Rhys – the absent recipient of a severely bent shifter wrench. Bush Mechanic: for ingenious bush repairs with tools and equipment on hand, not necessarily used in its intended purpose – won by Leo – whom received a roll of duct tape and a can of WD40, the universal answer to anything that is moving/not moving. The Johnno’s received their awards in their respective categories -

Mr Johnno receiving the ‘Sausage Handler’ award a new BBQ apron – for the most consistent effort on the BBQ at every club function where a BBQ was used; …and Mrs Johnno receiving the ‘Rubber Wrecker’ award of a 4 way wheel brace – for all the tyre changes that had to occur while she was driving. The door prizes were:

A 2 day 4WD course provided by Direct 4WD Awareness A nights accommodation at the DoubleTree with breakfast for 2 A family First Aid kit from ARB A tyre repair kit from ARB … and a months supply of emergency water filtration supplies from Desert Dwellers. Over $2000 worth of prizes were handed out to the lucky winners.

The cake had been crafted by Sam from Ollie’s Cakehouse, and was enough to feed a small army. And feed them we did. Chocolate Mud Cake for everyone, and a take home container for those who could carry it. A great afternoon/evening out that will leave memories to last years to come.

My thanks must go to my wife, Steph, as it was her commitment to seeing the event run without a hitch that made it what it was.

Thanks to our sponsors – DoubleTree by Hilton, ARB 4×4 Accessories, Desert Dwellers, Direct 4WD Awareness.
