Breakfast BBQ & Window Breaking Session

22 May 2017 by Stephanie Dominguez

9am Sunday. What better a time than to meet up with a few likeminded glass shattering enthusiasts for a therapeutic session of making large window sheets (supplied by ARB – thanks guys) into little piles of toughened glass on the floor.

The BBQ bacon and egg sandwiches made by our resident BBQ master Johnno, the tea and coffee recharging the batteries of those that had a hard night just gone, and a light breeze set the tone for the mornings efforts.

On test were the usual accouterments for breaking windows – some large fencing pliers, a leatherman, a hammer, these items had various amounts of success at forcefully creating a vehicle exit. There was a few myths busted as well – the tapered arms of a headrest, and the end of the seatbelt were both proven to be inefficient, and ultimately unsuccessful without enough room to swing them.

Some specially designed equipment was put to the test as well – emergency exit devices showed mixed success with the clear winners being the ResQMe devices on hand with Steve and Kirsten. These tiny tools could cut through a seatbelt like butter, and made very short work of any toughened glass in their sights.

With all the glass cleaned up, and all the bacon and egg sandwiches finished, we learnt a lot about what does and does not work in emergency exit tools, as well as ways to save ourselves and others from situations that require hasty extraction from a vehicle.
